This is not Microsoft’s first attempt to adapt a video chat app to the realities of the COVID-19 pandemic. Skype got a connectionless meeting feature at the start of the outbreak. The squad expansion is considerably more ambitious, however, and could be vital when a virus outbreak shattered most hopes for in-person vacation meetings.
Not that Microsoft necessarily had a lot of choice. Zoom is temporarily giving up its 40 minutes of free video calls for Thanksgiving. If Teams didn’t have a free and effectively unlimited option, Microsoft could easily lose users determined to stay in touch at a particularly difficult time.
