Microsoft is in talks with Discord to acquire the game-focused chat software for more than $ 10 billion, according to sources speaking to Bloomberg. Xbox chief Phil Spencer is reportedly speaking to Discord about the potential deal.
VentureBeat reported earlier today that Discord was eyeing a sale of more than $ 10 billion after several potential buyers expressed interest and it signed an exclusive acquisition discussion with a party, suggesting a deal could be concluded. Bloomberg sources say the deal isn’t imminent, however, with one person claiming Discord would be more likely to go public than seek an acquisition.
Bloomberg names Epic Games and Amazon as companies that have also had discussions with Discord in the past.
Discord has around 140 million monthly users and had a turnover of 130 million dollars last year, The Wall Street Journal recently reported, although the business is not yet profitable. Its last valuation was $ 7 billion after a funding round in December that generated $ 100 million.
Discord’s software is free for most users, but the company makes money from $ 9.99 monthly Nitro subscriptions that offer more advanced features like high-resolution screen sharing, packs more stickers and higher download limits.
