Microsoft increases OneDrive file size download limit to 250 GB

Microsoft is increasing the download file size limit for its OneDrive file storage service to 250 GB, from 100 GB previously, the company said.

Microsoft says it is making the change to recognize the increase in remote work and learning, where users must reliably and securely share large files such as 4K or 8K video files, 3D models, CAD files or large scientific datasets with colleagues, clients and peers.

Microsoft explained that the change isn’t limited to work and school users – anyone using OneDrive can now take advantage of the new 250GB file size limit to download items like video albums and large game files.

The company claims to have successfully increased the download limit by breaking each file into chunks, with each item encrypted with a unique key. Additionally, large file synchronization has been optimized with the help of differential synchronization, which only downloads changes that users make to the stored file.

Support for the new 250GB file size download will roll out by the end of January and Microsoft expects general availability of the new limit by the end of this quarter.
