The 720p resolution for cloud streaming Xbox Game Pass (aka xCloud) is decent on a phone, but that clearly won’t lower it when the service is on PCs and iPads. Fortunately, a resolution improvement seems to be in order. Windows Central and The edge both say Microsoft is testing 1080p streams. It’s not certain how extensive the testing is or how quickly you’ll see this upgrade, but it would be a huge quality boost for gamers on the big screen.
A simultaneous leak of an updated Xbox Game Streaming app for Windows also shows how the software will be able to accommodate more gamers. It would offer support for touch and gyro (motion) inputs, making it more possible to remotely play Xbox games on tablets like the Surface line when you don’t have a gamepad.
Both the 1080p test and the new app are ahead of the curve, and it’s unclear whether either will appear. Microsoft is rumored to have a gaming event scheduled for March, but there’s no guarantee that the upgrade will be ready to go at that time. However, it’s easy to see Microsoft moving forward. Cloud gaming and remote gaming work best when you don’t have to worry about your device choices or picture quality – they wouldn’t be quite ubiquitous after that, but they would be close enough so that more people can try them.
