Microsoft is working on a new crazy Xbox controller

[ad_1]

A new patent reveals that Microsoft is working on a new type of Xbox controller, and it looks like the company is taking inspiration from Nintendo and its new Joy-Con controllers. Specifically, Microsoft has filed a patent application for new removable game controllers that will be used for mobile devices and will likely accompany the Xbox Project xCloud initiative, which aims to integrate streaming games on various devices.

The patent – spotted by Windows Latest – was in fact filed in 2017 with the US Patent and Trademark Office, but was only published in the United States. July 9, 2019. The patent includes many illustrations showing what the controller – pretty much – like if Microsoft put the product on the market.

"A charging device for one or more input modules for a touch screen device is described," reads the patent summary. "The charging device comprises a charging mechanism and portions which are shaped to receive an input module."

There is more in the abstract, but it is a technical jargon. Basically, two separate controllers are fixed on a screen in the same way as the Nintendo Joy-Cons. And like the Joy-Cons, the screen is largely hidden. And as you can imagine, controllers can be connected directly or wirelessly.

"The inputs are mapped to software running on the touch screen computer device and where the touch screen device is a device (for example a touch screen device) for a computing device (eg a touch screen for a desktop computer ), the entries are mapped to software running on this computing device, "reads in part of the patent.

As you probably know, patents are often filed. Companies like Microsoft classify them all the time. Sometimes something comes from them, other times nothing. That said, it is not very surprising to see Microsoft playing with it with Project xCloud en route and more and more in the mobile space between xCloud and Game Pass.
