March marks a change for Sony's PlayStation Plus service. Instead of giving 4 games, covering the PS4, PS3 and PS Vita, Sony gives more than two.

Each month, Sony will give subscribers two games on PS4, but PS3 and PS Vita games are no longer part of the benefits. In itself, it's not that bad, but it highlights one thing that Microsoft is doing so well.

Microsoft now offers twice as many games as Sony. Two for the Xbox One and two for the Xbox 360 or the original Xbox games, or a mix of both. Again, giving more games is not the real problem here. The fact is that the four games, no matter the platform, will play on Xbox One.

This is thanks to Microsoft's excellent backward compatibility program. Now, when Microsoft publishes Xbox 360 or OG Xbox games for Games With Gold, you can play them on your Xbox One even if you've never owned those previous systems. (You can see what's available in March here.)

It's really cool, and would not it be cool if the same thing applied to PlayStation Plus? And if instead of simply interrupting free PS3 games, each PS3 game on PS + was backward compatible on PS4? This would further enhance the already excellent PlayStation 4 catalog and offer even more value to Plus subscribers.

In the current state of things, it is not a great loss to see the free games on PS3 and Vita disappear. But this underscores the added value that Microsoft gives to players. Add Game Pass and you can see how much more Microsoft has done to create an Xbox than a specific console, but a viable platform that extends beyond any console generation.
