One of the most important ways that Microsoft wants to differentiate the new Chromium-based Edge from the current EdgeHTML-based Edge is to support other platforms. The original Edge was, for no good reason, linked to Windows 10, which meant that web developers of platforms such as Windows 7 or macOS had no way to test the appearance of their pages unless to turn on a Windows 10 virtual machine.
The new browser is however a cross-platform business. Early versions of preview have been released for Windows 10, versions for Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 being promised soon; today, these are joined by versions for macOS.
The macOS version looks like the versions of Windows 10 that we have seen so far, but it is not the same. Microsoft wants to be a good citizen on macOS by not only producing a platform-compliant application (using the appropriate fonts, icons, spacing, etc.), but also adapting to the unique hardware of the platform. ; Apple. To this end, the company is working to support the touch bar available on some Apple portable systems, which it uses for media control, tab switching, and bookmark access. Microsoft will also ensure that Edge support as a Progressive Web App host correctly adopts macOS behaviors for interacting with the Dock, Application Switch, and Spotlight.
This contrasts with the Windows 10 version, where the old Edge uses much more modern Fluent design than the newer. Indeed, Edge was one of the pioneers of Fluent Design. As part of the adoption of the Chromium user interface, much of this work has been lost.
The version requires macOS 10.12 and later. It is initially available in the Canary Channel, updated daily or approximately. In the coming weeks, a channel version for developers will be released and updated weekly, followed by a beta version of the channel, which will be updated every six weeks.
