In recent weeks, users trying to download Office applications from the Microsoft Store under Windows 10 have not been able to do so and have been redirected to the Office website, which would download automatically the classic installation program. Naturally, many have been frustrated by this problem, because downloading from the Microsoft Store has direct benefits such as automatic updates via the store, the ability to choose which Office applications to install, and so on.
But with the typical installer, known as "click to run," users need to install all the default Office products and have updates managed through Office's own update program. I much prefer to be able to install Office from the Microsoft Store for these reasons. Not being able to do it in the last few weeks has been incredibly frustrating. Unfortunately, it seems that this change is deliberate, according to a spokesman for Microsoft:
People will continue to be able to find Office in the store. If the Office image is not already preinstalled, they will be directed to https://account.microsoft.com/ to install it.
Office applications are always listed in the store and they always have "install" buttons on their application pages. But the install button no longer installs the application directly, unless your PC comes with Office, but takes you to the Office website to download the classic Office installer. This experience is not fantastic and ends up compromising the interest of the Microsoft Store. I want the store to manage all my apps and I can not do it with Office anymore.
For Windows 10 S users, the classic installation program now works correctly with the S mode enabled, just like the Microsoft Edge Insider Preview installation program. So this change applies with the S Mode enabled too. I asked Microsoft why Office could no longer be installed from the store and update this article as soon as I heard from it.
