Two days ago, Microsoft released KB4512941, after only a day of testing in the preview ring. At that time, the update did not have any known issues, but it seems to be simply because Microsoft did not look strong enough.
WindowsLatest indicates that a number of users complain about the CPU intensive use of SearchUI.exe, part of Cortana, via FeedbackHub and Reddit (1, 2).
Users complain that SearchUI.exe uses 30 to 40% of the CPU usage and this, even if it does not respond.
"After the installation of KB4512941 (OS Build 18362.329), the pop-up containing the search results remains empty, SearchUI.exe constantly uses the processor and about 200 MB of memory," a user documented the problem on the Hub feedback from Microsoft.
"Cortana regularly runs above 35% CPU usage and 150 MB of memory, as reported by the Task Manager, for at least a day now. Despite this fact, the Search button next to the Start menu displays a dialog box that does not display any items when entering a search query, even after several minutes of waiting, complains another user of the CPU usage on Feedback Hub.
More worryingly, it seems that the Windows Insider testers have already picked up the problem and reported the problem in the comments hub, but that Microsoft has not answered this question.
The usual readers will know that this is reminiscent of the data removal bug of the October 2018 update, which had also been detected by the testers but ignored by Microsoft. More worryingly, Microsoft has announced that it will make changes to its process to address issues that have not generated a lot of positive votes, but which would nevertheless pose problems for end-users. These do not seem to work.
If you are one of those concerned, the simplest fix may be to uninstall the update. To do this:
- Tap Windows + I to open the Settings application.
- Click on the option "Update and Security".
- On the Update and Security screen, click the "Show update history" option.
- On the next screen, click the "Uninstall Updates" link.
- Select the update (KB4512941), then click the "Uninstall" button.
