Microsoft Teams is now officially bigger than Slack

Microsoft teams may only have been present for two years, but the group discussion platform is already larger than one of its major competitors. Microsoft announced that Teams had more than 13 million daily active users. The amount rises to 19 million when we look at weekly active users. This means that the service is officially more important than Slack, an independent platform for online discussion and collaboration.

This is the most specific that Microsoft has to date with information about its group discussion platform. The only other update provided by the company was made in March, when it revealed that 500,000 organizations were using this service.

In addition to the audience information, Microsoft has shared some upcoming features for the teams. Today, he launches what he calls "announcements", which put forward important information in a channel. It plans to launch channel moderation and priority notifications, which will ping a recipient every two minutes until a response is provided, later this month. Finally, the cross-channel broadcast will be "soon".

Microsoft introduced Teams to Office 365 subscription users in March 2017, and added a free version in July 2018. This service replaces the launch of Slack. If Slack exists since August 2013, catching up so quickly to its audience in the space of two years is a headache for Microsoft and it may be one of the reasons why it decided to Wait so long before announcing numbers about Teams.

Despite the obvious comparisons, Microsoft and Slack have many instances where they do not target the same audiences. Microsoft has a well-established business reputation and its integration with the Office 365 suite makes it a preferred choice for groups already working in this ecosystem. Slack remains an alternative for small to large businesses.
