Microsoft is partnering with SK Telecom to provide its 5G xCloud streaming service in South Korea. The computer giant plans to launch the public previews of the xCloud project next month. SK Telecom is now an "exclusive operational partner" of Microsoft's cloud game service in Korea. The 5G is ideal for services like xCloud, and once networks are deployed around the world with mmWave, we should start seeing some of the promise of latency reduction that will benefit online gaming services.
Some SK Telecom customers will be able to try xCloud streaming next month on LTE and 5G networks. Microsoft is currently focusing on testing phone-based xCloud versions in October, but the company has not yet revealed its exact preview plans. Microsoft could further detail its xCloud efforts at the company's Surface hardware event in New York on Oct. 2.
In any case, the Microsoft partnership in this area is interesting and could be reminiscent of other carrier exclusives for xCloud in the future. Microsoft seeks to optimize its data centers, networks, and global service across a variety of networks. By forming partnerships with specific operators, he will be able to do this more closely, while allowing operators to gain an additional means of attracting customers from their rivals. It would be amazing to see Microsoft opt for an exclusive deal with AT & T or Verizon in the US, but that makes perfect sense for the company in markets like Korea.
