Microsoft is experimenting with prototypes of Xbox controllers for phones and tablets. The controllers attach themselves to the sides of the devices to provide an experience similar to that of the Nintendo switch. "The success of the Switch demonstrates the value of mobile gaming with physical controls," says an article from Microsoft Research, spotted by Windows Central.
Microsoft has experimented with a variety of sliding handles that can make attachments much more flexible and less bulky than existing solutions such as GameCase, GameVice and ION iCade Mobile. Microsoft Research first documented these prototypes of controllers in October and now Microsoft has even patented this idea.
Patents and research do not necessarily mean that we will see these controllers in time for the launch of the xCloud game, but Microsoft has overhauled its research division in recent years to make its inventions a reality. These prototypes seem to be a far better solution than connecting a separate Xbox controller or relying on touch screen controls for games.
Microsoft is working on a touch adaptation kit for xCloud so that developers can make their games more user-friendly, but the company has always publicly demonstrated that its cloud game service is associated with an Xbox controller connected to an Android phone. We were expecting a company to create a good controller design for phones, and Microsoft might be ready to fill this gap. Microsoft also manufactures the best professional gamepad (the Xbox Elite controller). The extension to phones and tablets seems to be the next logical step.
