Microsoft's remodeled Edge is officially ready for use – and is suitable for everyday use – with the release of the full beta version of the browser for Windows and macOS.

In a blog post, Microsoft explains that, even though the new browser is still previewing, with this new beta, "Microsoft Edge is ready for daily use," or is actually ready for use.

Previously, Chromium-based Edge preview versions were delivered in the Canary and Dev versions, which represent a very recent test version and a relatively newer version, respectively.

Canary is updated daily, as well as very recent changes, while Dev is updated weekly. The new beta channel will receive major updates every six weeks (as well as occasional security bugs or patches here and there).

In other words, all the truly fragile elements that could occur in Canary or Dev should have been completely eliminated for the beta, and you will have a reliable browser. A good choice for everyday use, as Microsoft notes.

Take this beta

The new beta supports 14 different languages and includes a tracking prevention feature (enabled via an indicator). You can download the beta here.

All accounts have been downloaded more than 1,000 times in Edge preview versions. Microsoft also highlights the contributions made to the Chromium engine, with more than 1,000 Chromium commits made.

We have certainly noticed that Microsoft is trying to advance Chromium – and therefore not only the new Edge, but also Google Chrome and other Chromium browsers.

This includes recent changes such as planning to improve the battery life of a laptop while playing videos, as well as better integration with Windows 10 and more.

On a more general level, this is part of Microsoft's big breakthrough in open source, which has been going on for some time.
