Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson last met in the ring in June 1997. In this fight, Holyfield managed to hand Tyson his second loss in two contests with “The Real Deal”, although the victory came when Tyson sadly bit his ear to earn a disqualification. With Tyson back to compete in his legend’s league, is it time for a third fight?
Holyfield thinks so.
“My side tried to make the fight happen and we got nothing but an apology,” Holyfield said in a press release Tuesday (transcript via ESPN). “Now I can see why he wanted a tune-up fight before he thought about beating me. No more excuses. This is the fight that must take place for our two legacies. On Saturday night you said you were ready to beat me, so sign the contract and step in the ring, Tyson. The world is waiting and it’s on you now. I’m ready.”
On Tyson’s side, “Iron” is set to share the ring for a third time, but has pointed to problems in contract negotiations as a delay.
“Maybe Evander needs to talk to me because every time my associates talk to his associates it doesn’t go well,” Tyson said. “Then I do not know. If you could see what we’ve been up to tonight, if these guys really care about Evander’s well-being, they would’ve gotten into a fight with Evander. Maybe we’ll make another one, but whoever he is with, whoever takes care of him is totally wrong.
Both men seem interested, and there is certainly money to be made. Does this happen or will Tyson find a different enemy for his next exhibition match? If it were up to James “Buster” Douglas, now aged 60, they would take him back in the first quarter of 2021.
“I would appreciate this opportunity,” Douglas told USA Today Sports. “Being a boxer all these years and still feeling pretty good today, you still feel like you still have a fight in you. They always ask, “Why didn’t you get revenge?” It just has never been featured, as far as a rematch is concerned. It has often been mentioned. It is more or less that.”
Douglas arrested Tyson in the early 1990s in what is widely regarded as one of the biggest upheavals in professional boxing history, to lose the WBA, WBC and IBF heavyweight titles to Holyfield in his entire first title defense.
Maybe they can stage a triple threat match instead?
