North Carolina’s successful focus on talented and powerful defenders continues as she received an engagement from the rusher on board Bryson Jennings Thursday night.
The 6-foot-6, 235-pound star plays his high school ball in Clover Hill, Va. Midlothian. He chose the Tar Heels over Virginia, Virginia Tech, Kentucky and Penn State. Stealing Jennings from schools in the State of Virginia and especially Virginia Tech was considered a daunting task considering he was an hour’s drive from the Cavaliers, and especially since his father played football for the Hokies with current co-defensive line coach JC Price.
But several factors played a role in UNC’s success in wooing the defensive end on the weak side.
First of all, Jennings felt at home with the Carolina football family. He developed relationships with the players (which he highlighted as his favorite part of his official visit to UNC), assistant coaches and Mack and Sally Brown.
“I spoke to Mack Brown’s wife… It’s extremely cool,” Jennings said on recruiting. “Coach Mack Brown, he’s like a grandfather and she’s like a grandmother.”
On the football side, defensive coordinator Jay Bateman and outside linebackers coach Jovan DeWitt focused on Jennings’ ability to secure the quarterback.
“They just want me to rush this ferryman,” Jennings said. “A sleight of hand like a Julius Peppers or a Lawrence Taylor, that’s what they want me to be.”
In his squad, the nation’s No. 21-ranked rusher is seen explosive on the line of scrimmage, properly lowering his shoulders to sidestep tackles. On top of that, his size is quite intimidating and allows him to overpower opposing linemen.
When Jennings wrapped up his official visit to UNC on June 20, he said he had to compare his two co-finalists – UNC and Virginia Tech – side by side.
“I’m trying to nitpick,” Jennings told Inside Carolina. “It’s so hard to say anything bad about the two schools. It’s hard to find something bad about UNC and the same for Tech. I really have to reach out to find something just looking at the good they are both thriving [and] have a good base – good players there already, good coaches. “
Jennings’ two main conversations during her official visit were with Bateman and Brown, naturally. He said the defensive coordinator was bold and just told him he wanted Jennings at UNC.
Brown, meanwhile, played the “we want what’s best for you” card.
“[Brown] was like, ‘I’m not going to criticize another school. I want you to go where you feel most suited, ”Jennings said. “…[Brown] was really down to earth, really laid back, [and] real cold. So talking to him was cool in itself.
Jennings joins her fellow rushers on board Beau Atkinson and Great Hamrick in the 2022 UNC recruiting cycle. Atkinson and Hamrick are both four-star rookies in the state. Jennings is the fourth commitment of the State of Virginia to The 2022 class of the UNC.
