Over the years, WFAN radio host Mike Francesa has carved out a reputation for gentleness towards the New York Mets, especially when he interviewed one of his members.
Francesa would be close to the Wilpons and refrained from criticizing them in the past. Yesterday Francesa had no problem finding Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen as he looked for answers to explain the disappointing Mets season.
Van Wagenen entered Francesa's show after meeting the media for the first time in weeks before the Mets opened their series in Miami against the Marlins. Francesa began her interview with Van Wagenen essentially asking him to recite his opening speech to the media to see how he was presenting the team publicly.
Francesa then raised the pressure by asking Van Wagenen a lot of the tough questions fans asked on social media throughout the year. One of the first questions he asked Brodie was, "Do you think you did wrong or were you unlucky?"
Van Wagenen remained polite throughout the interrogation, addressing issues like this by telling half-truths and dancing around the critics he was launching.
Francesa: "Are you qualified for this job?"
Van Wagenen: "Yes of course, but I have learned a lot."
Francesa: "What do you think of your acquisitions out of season?"
Wan Wagenen: "On paper, they made sense back then but did not work out as planned."
On Francesa's merit, he did an excellent job of asking Van Wagenen some questions, where he rightly noticed that the GM M / M was avoiding the question.
A good example of this is an exchange that took place after Francesa asked Van Wagenen if he micromanaged the team.
Van Wagenen said that he did not like the term micro-managed, but that there is a collaborative process in everything they do as an organization.
Francesa responded by asking a series of questions about all the ways in which Van Wagenen's presence was felt in Mickey Callaway"Decision making.
"Did you tell your manager that he could not start [Edwin] Diaz in the eighth round? "Did you tell your manager to beat you Robinson Cano third?"
Van Wagenen simply answered no to all of the above, but Francesa did not buy the story that GM Mets was selling.
In many ways, the interview featured Van Wagenen and his ability to avoid questions, while still portraying an optimistic picture of the organization as a whole. In the same way, Francesa showed that this market was not naive enough to simply buy her charm and understand the truth about this often-maligned organization.
The interview lasted a little over 25 minutes and covered all the pressing issues facing the Mets this season and beyond.
Francesa was laudatory of the core of the players that the Mets have set up, namely the All-Stars, but she questioned the balance of strength on the list and of course the brutal Bullpen.
Van Wagenen has accepted the problems in place, without giving any real guidance on how he will solve them, if it is not doing the right thing as an organization.
In all fairness to Van Wagenen, he is a man who has been an extremely successful professional in his previous field and who can absolutely learn from his mistakes at work and become a quality general manager.
Still, interviews like this with Francesa can also teach her that it's better to learn fast if you want to succeed in New York because it will not take you long to find yourself in the hot seat.
