Mike McCarthy’s Cowboys aren’t what you’d call a smash hit in 2020, but his creativity might have helped them win Week 11.
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero provided a revealing story behind Dallas’ upset victory in Monday’s edition of The results. It was big fresh fruit, a tool of destruction, and an old routine borrowed from a famous comedian.
McCarthy gathered his team in the team hotel ballroom on Saturday night and apologized for not emphasizing enough the importance of the team’s goals for the week before turning to the most important goal: to hammer the ball out of the hands of Vikings running back Dalvin Cook. McCarthy then grabbed a mace – not a prop, but a legitimate commercial-grade mace – and rolled the staff members into watermelons decorated with individual objectives for the game.
On the signal, McCarthy brandished the hammer, announced the goal, and smashed the watermelon. He continued down the line, to the delight of his players, dipping his own pants in watermelon juice before arriving at a fruit adorned with the photo of Cook, the NFL’s main rusher entering the week. 11.
Cowboys defensive end Demarcus Lawrence spotted the fruit, jumped up and exclaimed that he must be the one to crush Dalvin Cook watermelon. McCarthy handed the hammer back and watched Lawrence wipe out the melon, setting the tone for Sunday’s affair.
