Baseball Hall of Fame member Mike Piazza defended California Republican Larry Elder on Tuesday, urging voters to oust Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom’s first term in the state’s recall election – but that didn’t not worked.
Newsom has managed to fend off challenges from Elder and a group of other Republicans to stay in office to complete his term.
Tuesday being ruling day in the recall election, Piazza, 53, a former New York Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers star, posted a 44-second video on Twitter endorsing Elder, a host of conservative radio that was the Republican frontrunner.

“Come out and vote to call Gavin Newsom back and put Larry Elder in Sacramento,” Piazza said in the video. “When I got to Los Angeles all my friends were talking about was moving to California. And now everyone is talking about leaving California. Larry Elder wants to change that. He’s a man who loves deeply. California and bring back the California Dream Vote for Larry Elder.
“All everyone is talking about is leaving California. Larry Elder wants to change that.”

Piazza, a notorious supporter of former President Trump, added that if Elder won, Piazza would personally return to Dodger Stadium for the first time since the end of his MLB career to thank “all the Dodgers fans who voted. for him. [Elder] and say hello to a lot of friends that I haven’t seen in a long time. “
However, his efforts appeared to be in vain as Newsom was to remain Governor of California and Elder admitted defeat on Tuesday night.
Newsom, who was overwhelmingly elected governor in 2018 in the heavily blue state, faced a recall triggered last year mainly over accusations he mismanaged the state’s response to the coronavirus.
Voters asked two questions about Newsom’s recall ballots. The first question was whether the governor should be removed from office. If more than 50% were in favor of removing Newsom, the second question proposed a list of 46 candidates vying to replace him.
The ballots were mailed last month to California’s estimated 22 million registered voters and was to be stamped or surrendered when the polls close at 8 p.m. PT.

Piazza, considered one of the greatest offensive receivers in baseball history, was a 62nd round pick by Los Angeles in the 1988 MLB Draft. He played seven seasons with the Dodgers, before moving to being traded to the Florida Marlins, who then returned it to the Mets.
