CLEARWATER, Fla .– Mike Tauchman’s role on the 2021 Yankees has yet to be fully defined. An injury wouldn’t help him find much clarity.
Tauchman fouled his right shin in a batting attack on top of the Yankees’ second 6-2 loss to the Phillies on Sunday at BayCare Ballpark. He stayed in the game, but was replaced in left field a set later by Ryan LaMarre.
Aaron Boone said after the game Tauchman was removed to prevent swelling and no x-rays were scheduled “at this time.”
“We’ll see how it goes in the morning,” the manager said.
Clint Frazier also gave the Yankees a brief scare when he found himself uncomfortable after slipping into third place later in the game, but Boone said he was fine. Frazier was on the right ground to get used to the position if it needs to be used on occasion, Boone said.
The Yankees are still trying to sort their bottom spots on the list, with Justin Wilson facing a stiff shoulder that briefly sidelined him. The left-hander may need a brief stint on the IL to open the season.
Boone said he’s not sure the roster will be finalized by the time the team travels to New York after Monday’s Grapefruit League Final against the Tigers in Tampa.
Other decisions to make is what to do with Tyler Wade, who has struggled at home plate and still has minor league options.
Boone praised Wade’s “defensive versatility” and his ability to play shortstop and outfield, as well as his speed on the basepaths, but there is no guarantee that he will. there to open the regular season.
Gio Urshela said his surgically repaired right elbow held up well in the spring and that he would be comfortable if called upon to play the occasional shortstop. He continued to take Grounders there after playing a Grapefruit League game in that position.
Jay Bruce started at first base as he prepares for regular playing time following Luke Voit injury. He looked good on Sunday, fielding a routine grounder and scooping a wide throw from DJ LeMahieu – who was third – that pulled Bruce out of the bag.

Boone said where Bruce hits in the roster will be dictated in part by who the team faces. With southpaw Hyun Jin Ryu scheduled to depart for Toronto on opening day in the Bronx, Boone said Bruce could be the only left-handed stick in the roster.
“We’ll try to be strategic with where we’ve placed it,” Boone said. “Either way, he more than resisted lefties.
Miguel Andujar still suffers from discomfort in his right wrist. Boone said Andujar hit a tee and threw “a few days ago” after days without symptoms, but then had some pain and backed off.
“[Saturday] was a better day, ” said Boone. “He’s definitely better, but he’s not out of the woods yet.”
