Anyone watching the preseason should be prepared to see some pretty mundane football, for the most part. Much of the game will be played by those taking on backup roles at the start of seasons, if they are lucky enough to make a roster. In other words, take what you see with a grain of salt.
But while Dwayne Haskins may not have recorded impressive numbers on his preseason debut with the Pittsburgh Steelers, he has shown enough that his head coach, Mike Tomlin, has come away in awe of what ‘he offered, coming in as a second quarterback behind Mason. Rodolphe.
“I liked his attitude. I thought he was a very good communicator. I thought he was really there and a little bit cerebral the way you like the quarterback position, ”he said of Haskins after the game. “But it’s so much the ball in front of him and the others.”
“That’s why it’s important, man,” he said of the opportunity to enter the stadiums for the preseason. “We were so excited to participate in this game, man. We will especially use this as an additional opportunity to gain some exposure to these quarters ”.
At the end of the day, Haskins completed eight of 13 attempted passes for 54 yards, averaging just 4.2 yards per attempt, with no touchdowns or interceptions, although he and Rudolph both suffered a few drops from their receptors. Haskins also had a five-yard run.
The Steelers have three quarters behind Ben Roethlisberger at training camp with them, Joshua Dobbs being the other. Based on the practice reports, it seems pretty clear that Haskins had been the most successful.
Other than a deep bond with Chase Claypool, Rudolph also hasn’t done much to change perceptions of his early fights in the camp. He ended the game by completing six of nine passes for 84 yards, including 45 in that game against Claypool. As for Dobbs, he completed four of six for 37 yards, including a touchdown pass to Tyler Simmons.
There’s still plenty of practice and three more preseason games left, but I’m not sure tonight’s performance has really moved things for anyone when it comes to looking for position in the quarterback.
I think we’ll see that there is competition for the number two quarterback position, and it won’t be surprising that Tomlin has Haskins to start a game or two. It will help all quarterbacks, however, if they could start putting their offensive line back into good health.
