Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin confirmed linebacker Bud Dupree will miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury at a press conference Thursday and spent some time talking about the guy who will play a bigger role in defense.

Alex Highsmith was a third-round pick this season after recording 21 sacks and 47 tackles for a loss during his time in Charlotte. He played 128 defensive shots while maintaining a regular role on special teams as a rookie. He was credited with 20 tackles, one sack, one interception and three tackles for loss in those appearances.

Tomlin said “that’s life in this industry” when discussing the need to replace Dupree at this point in the season and noted that the Steelers have had to do it with Robert Spillane after Devin Bush was injured. . Tomlin said he was “just as comfortable” with Highsmith as he was with Spillane because of the work they did “when we ring the bell”.

“And we’re ringing the Alex Highsmith bell now,” Tomlin said.

Tomlin also said he didn’t think TJ Watt was going to suffer because Dupree was out of action, but he would definitely get a little more attention. If Highsmith can make teams pay for it, the Steelers should be in good defensive form.
