CHICAGO (AP) – Mike Trout is probably done for the year. Ditto for Jo Adell, another talented outfielder from the Los Angeles Angels.
Manager Joe Maddon said on Wednesday he would be very surprised if Trout played again this season. The AL’s three-time MVP injured his right calf while running on May 17 and suffered a setback last month, but he left open the possibility of coming back this year.
Adell was placed on the 10 Day Injury List after injuring himself when he crashed into the wall on the left as he attempted to catch Garrett Stubbs’ RBI double in the ninth round of the Angels’ 4-2 victory in Houston on Saturday night.
He banged the back of his head against the wall in the room, but the team said he had left abdominal strain.
“The left side of his body, he feels something in there where he can’t really swing or swing the bat, and that’s about it,” Maddon said.
The Angels, fourth, have 17 games to go after outscoring the Chicago White Sox 3-2 on Wednesday night. While leaving open the possibility that Adell could return, Maddon said “that would be hard to imagine.”
Adell, 22, was selected by Los Angeles with the No.10 pick in the 2017 entry draft. He made his big-league debut last year, averaging .161 in 38 games, but he showed more bursts of his potential this season.
Adell had three hits and three RBIs in his season debut with the Angels on Aug. 3. He averaged .246 with four homers and 26 RBIs in 35 games.
“Wonderful improvement in a lot of his game,” said Maddon. “You can take any part of it and there’s an improvement. “
Trout tried to come back this year, but experienced calf pain after running the bases on August 28. A chuckling Maddon called his comments on Trout an “unofficial statement,” not wanting to jump in front of the star hitter. ruling it out, but indicated that he just didn’t have enough time to replay.
“I watch him do his job and it’s the same. The guy wants to be there so badly, ”Maddon said. “You watch him in the canoe every night, he’s on all terrains. My God, he’s on all terrains. He comes and talks to me during the game. He is absolutely, totally committed.
Infielder Jose Rojas has been recalled from Salt Lake Triple-A to replace Adell on the roster. Rojas is beating .211 with four home runs and 10 RBIs in 46 games for Los Angeles this season.
