Earlier today, Hulu announced that it had placed a direct order for the series at Iron Mike, a Mike Tyson Biography Series from Me Tonya screenwriter Steven Rogers and director Craig Gillespie with MixedKarin Gist as showrunner.

This angered Tyson, who posted a fairly strong statement on social media calling for the series to be “misappropriated” and “out of touch” to be announced, particularly during Black History Month.

Hulu @ TCA: Full Deadline Coverage

“Hulu’s announcement to make an unauthorized miniseries of Tyson’s story without compensation, while unfortunate, is not surprising,” the boxing legend wrote in an Instagram post (see below ). “This announcement following the social disparities in our country is a prime example of how the greed of Hulu’s companies has led to this muted cultural diversion of Tyson’s life. Making this announcement during Black History Month only confirms Hulu’s concern for the black story rights dollars. Hollywood needs to be more sensitive to the experiences of black people, especially after everything that happened in 2020. ”

The boxer added that an “authorized” story is currently in development and the project will be announced in the coming days.

Hulu declined to comment.
