LOS ANGELES – Mike Tyson has said he smoked marijuana just before fighting Roy Jones Jr. on Saturday night on his famous return to the ring at the age of 54.
“Absolutely, yes,” he said at his post-fight press conference.
Tyson and Jones fought to a draw in an eight-round exhibition game at Staples Center, marked by three former WBC champions.
After the fight, Tyson indicated he smoked another joint, apparently before meeting with the media to discuss his first fight in 15 years.
“Look, I can’t quit smoking,” he says. “I smoked during the fights. I just have to smoke, I’m sorry. I’m a smoker. & Mldr; I smoke every day. I’ve never quit.”
Fighting in an exhibition rather than a professional fight apparently gave Tyson some leeway. The Anti-Doping Voluntary Association tested fighters for performance-enhancing drugs before the fight, but marijuana is reportedly not on the list of banned substances.
Tyson said he quit using cocaine about two and a half years ago, but marijuana hasn’t proven to be the case – even inside the ring.
“It’s just who I am,” he said. “It has no effect on me from a negative point of view. It’s just what I do and how I am and how I’m going to die. There is no explanation. There is no beginning, there is no end. “
Did marijuana help numb the pain on Saturday night?
“No, that numbs me,” he said. “It does not numb the pain”
The fight proved to be entertaining, with Tyson looking fit and powerful and landing hard punches on Jones’ body. For his part, Jones showed some of his old showmanship, but also kept Tyson tied up for much of the fight as a means of survival.
Although Tyson has said he doesn’t know how much money the fight has made, he has assured that his winnings will not be spent as they were in the past, when he squandered much of the $ 685 million. dollars that Forbes reported that Tyson had earned during his career.
“I’m here for a purpose,” he said. “I’m not here for my ego. My ego takes the money, buys planes, nice houses packing a bunch of chicks and has orgies and everything.
“It’s not who he is right now. This guy was just someone who had to be, ultimately he was a platform to become me.”
What interests Tyson now, he says, are his family, his pigeons, his clothes and, yes, his joints. They must be easy to find considering in 2017 the former heavyweight champion founded Tyson Ranch, a cannabis company.
He said he cared deeply about something else too – charity. Although Tyson offered few details, he said he focused on helping people less fortunate than himself.

In the real world, Tyson has said he plans to return to boxing. Maybe against Jones in a rematch. He has also expressed interest in wrestling top heavyweights like Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua or Deontay Wilder.
But there are other options.
