Titans coach Mike Vrabel had a lot to say publicly about wide receiver Julio Jones committing a personal foul in Sunday’s regular season opener. Vrabel did not apologize for his frankness on Wednesday.
Via Jim Wyatt of the team’s official website, Vrabel said: “I never told you anything, the cameras, that I did not tell the players. “
This is the right approach. As for Jones, the question is whether he has heard such comments before, in public or in private. The Falcons seemed to tiptoe around him, in various ways. Vrabel, who has learned a lot playing for Bill Belichick, understands the importance of not letting any player get special treatment.
If Jones makes a mistake, Jones has to hear it from Vrabel. While Belichick may have chosen to keep him private and not public, the reality is that Vrabel has the prerogative to coach his team as he sees fit. If Jones doesn’t like it, well, don’t make any personal mistakes and it won’t.
The Titans played poorly on both sides of the ball. They need focus and discipline for the second week. Jones’ penalty is just one of many flaws that Vrabel must address if the Titans hope to have a chance to avoid losing to the Seahawks on Sunday and falling to 0-2.
