Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said Sunday that Greg Joseph missed a decisive 37-yard field goal, which should have been “easy.” But a day later, Zimmer indicated that Joseph was not in the hot seat.
Zimmer said Joseph is still a good kicker and that one game is not enough to change his opinion on it.
“That kid hit it right,” Zimmer said, via ESPN’s Courtney Cronin. “He missed a few this week. This is not the reason why we lost the game. Many kickers miss field goals. Let’s let the kid take a break, okay? “
Zimmer may be hesitant to switch kickers after just two games, as he remembers the Vikings already doing it: In 2018, Minnesota cut kicker Daniel Carlson to just two games of the season. Since then, the Vikings have gone through a series of kickers without finding a good one, while Carlson is now in Las Vegas and has been one of the NFL’s most accurate kickers in recent years.
Joseph’s work therefore seems secure. At least until he misses another decisive basket.
