The Minnesota Vikings will have a different third offensive coordinator in as many seasons as Klint Kubiak takes on the role his father, Gary, occupied last season.
Elder Kubiak returned to an offensive coordinator role last year for the Vikings as former coordinator Kevin Stefanski was named head coach of the Cleveland Browns following the 2019 season.
Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer said Thursday he sees similarities between how Klint Kubiak works compared to Stefanski.
“Klint, he looks a lot like the way Kevin was when he was there,” Zimmer said, via Mark Craig of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. “It’s very detailed. He brings up the subject they want to discuss [in offensive meetings]. He will have his opinions. He’ll listen to the opinions of the other guys in the room and then sort of go from there.
Klint was quarterbacks coach under Stefanski for a season in 2019 before Stefanski left the team. He remained in the same role last season as Gary took over the role of coordinator for a season before announcing his retirement.
Klint was an offensive assistant and quarterback coach for the Broncos from 2016 to 2018. He joined the team in his father’s last season with the team as a head coach and remained on the staff under the head coach Vance Joseph for two seasons.
This will be the first time Klint has committed an offense in his career. Stefanski was also a first-time playing player when he took on the role of offensive coordinator at the end of the 2018 season following the sacking of John DeFilippo.
“He did a good job,” Zimmer said. “Everyone’s going to be wondering what it’s going to be like when you’re a first-time player, but at the end of the day each of us has always been a first-time caller at some point.”
