LINCOLN, Nebr. (AP) – Nebraska coach Tim Miles apologized Thursday for claiming he would remain a millionaire if he got fired.
Miles and Jeff Goodman, a basketball writer at WatchStadium.com, explained on Sunday how Miles and his family had been dealing with speculation about his future next season. The Cornhuskers (15-12, 5-11) are tied for 10th place in the Big Ten after firing four starters from the team that finished fourth, and the team did participate in the NCAA tournament only once in the seven seasons of Miles.
Miles, under contract until March 2021, would get a buyback of $ 2.52 million when he was fired next month.
"If they see me, they'll still pay me, I'm still a millionaire, so I have what it takes for me," Miles told Goodman.
A columnist for the Lincoln newspaper and fans posted on social media criticized Miles.
Miles tweeted on Thursday. "Earlier this week, my (sarcastic) attempt at humor during a podcast failed. Everyone who knows me knows that I became a coach and I remain a basketball coach for reasons other than my casual remark. "
