Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth separated because she felt like she could not be herself, according to a new report.
"She is at a point where she no longer wants to hide from who she is," a source close to the singer of "Wrecking Ball" told People Thursday. She wants to be true to herself. Being with Liam, it was just not possible. For them to be happy, she had to change too much as a person. She knows that not being with Liam will make her happier in the long run.
Cyrus, 26, and Hemsworth, 29, announced their separation earlier this month.

The star of "Independence Day: Resurgence" filed for divorce Wednesday, which would have hidden Cyrus, who, according to insiders, wanted to negotiate the marriage despite public rumors (and apparently much more) with Kaitlynn Carter.
An insider told Entertainment Tonight that Hemsworth wanted to rip off the bandaid of their broken marriage, saying, "Liam's decision to ask for a divorce is sad, but in the end it never worked, they were too different." Liam n & # Never wanted to share Miley with anyone, he loves her and he is way too traditional, and he finally realized that he just wanted to start all over again. "

"Liam admitted that it was time to leave, Liam's family was incredibly supportive, and they are relieved that it's over," the source added. "At first, Liam just wanted to give him time, but he finally felt that the situation was becoming unpleasant and he did not want to hang around in public. He decided that it was too much."
Despite the differences between the couple, Cyrus would have been surprised by the petition for divorce.
"She was not expecting it and is a little disappointed, but she is still doing well and has obviously evolved," said a source previously. "What she and Liam had had for a long time was very special. It's hard for her to think that she'll never have that with Liam again. There are so many things that she likes at home.

Cyrus and Hemsworth tied the knot in December after losing their home in Malibu in a fire. They announced their separation after eight months of marriage and more than a decade of repeated romance earlier this month – a few hours after the publication of the crooner's photos "We can not stop" kissing Kaitlynn Carter during his vacation in Italy.
