A military training plane crashed in a backyard in Lake Worth, Texas on Sunday, injuring the two pilots of the plane, damaging at least three homes and causing loss of electricity to dozens of homes, officials said.
The pilots ejected from the plane and a pilot’s parachute was caught in power lines, police said.
The pilots, who have not been identified, were taken to nearby hospitals. Three residents were treated with minor injuries at the scene, the Fort Worth Fire Department said in A declaration.
Lt. Michelle Tucker, spokesperson for the chief of naval training, said one of the pilots was in serious condition and the other in stable condition.
“For a pilot, this is the day you dread,” Lake Worth Police Department Chief JT Manoushagian said at a press conference on Sunday.
He said the cause of the crash was under investigation and referred reporters to military officials at the Joint Reserve Base at nearby Naval Air Station Fort Worth.
The chief of air force training said on twitter that the pilots were on a “routine training flight” in a Navy T-45C Goshawk jet trainer.
The plane crashed in a backyard, Lake Worth Fire Chief Ryan Arthur said at the press conference. The Red Cross was helping residents find housing due to damage to their homes, he added.
“It could have been a lot worse if it was direct contact with a residence,” he said. “Fortunately, this is not the case.”
At least 44 homes lost power as a result of the crash, the Fort Worth Fire Department said. Emergency crews were working to clear the area of the crash wreckage, Chief Ryan added, warning people to stay away from the crash site.
“It’s going to be dangerous for now, until we clear this debris,” he said.
Chief Arthur said given Lake Worth’s proximity to the military base, emergency teams had prepared for the possibility of a military crash in the area, calling the scenario “one of our highest priorities “.
