Millions of people are under winter storm warning as blizzards and heavy rain sweep across the United States

Parts of Wyoming and Nebraska are subject to blizzard warnings, while winter storm warnings and warnings are in effect for other parts of the region, CNN meteorologist Tyler Mauldin said.

The system will bring about 4 inches of heavy rain across the Midwest over a 72-hour period before slowly moving toward the East Coast next week, bringing rainy days with it.

And once it wears off in areas affected by snow on Monday, another system is poised to take its place and continue to offer wintry conditions, Mauldin said.

Blizzard Conditions

Snow in the central parts of the United States is expected to increase on Saturday, but will likely not peak until Sunday, Mauldin said.

Denver could see up to 2 feet of snow, with the Front Range Mountains and foothills reaching up to 4 feet. The highest elevations in southeastern Wyoming could see over 4 feet of snow.

This region is no stranger to the March snowfall. In fact, March is actually the snowiest month of the year for parts of Colorado and Wyoming. In Denver, each of the biggest snowstorms on March 10 amounts to more than a foot of snow. This year could be added to this list.

“The snow totals currently forecast are absolutely historic”, The NWS office in Cheyenne said.

On Sunday, severe storms will push east into Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana and Tennessee.

Floods are a threat in the Midwest

Rain threatens flooding

Flood warnings are also a big concern for this system in the Midwest.

With some rivers approaching flood stage, forecast heavy rains could bring rivers to dangerous levels.

Flooding is also a threat on Sunday, especially in parts of Missouri, Kansas and Illinois.

Other states – such as Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kentucky and Indiana – could also see flooding, especially if multiple storms pass in the same location, according to forecasts.

Widespread precipitation totals through Sunday are expected to be in the range of 2-4 inches, but some isolated spots could exceed 6 inches.
