It’s almost time to say goodbye to Minecraft Earth, as Mojang Studios is shutting it down for good on June 30. It’s not all sadness. If you’ve spent any money in the Pokémon Go-style sandbox app, you’ll be able to grab some starting gifts before it makes its way to the big cell phone in the sky. That is: free money for the Minecraft Marketplace and a free copy of the Minecraft Bedrock Edition.
“Minecraft Earth was designed around free movement and collaborative play – two things that have become almost impossible in today’s global situation,” the developers say. “As a result, we have made the difficult decision to reallocate our resources to other areas that bring value to the Minecraft community and to end support for Minecraft Earth.”
The game received its last update yesterday, removing microtransactions and adding all currently completed but unreleased content for players to try out. They’ve also reduced the time it takes to complete tasks like crafting and lowered the prices of in-game items to make it a bit easier to play.
Players who have spent real money on rubies, the in-game premium currency, will receive Minecoins to spend in the Minecraft Marketplace (where you can purchase player-created skins and adventures). Then players who have spent money on the app will receive a copy of the Minecraft Bedrock Edition for their mobile device – which is cool because Minecraft has cross-platform progression, so you can take your PC saves with you. on the go.
Minecraft Earth was released towards the end of 2019, so it will have managed about a year and a half of life before it closes in June. Sadly, that year turned out to be a bit bad for a game that encourages going out to meet your friends.
