Since Minecraft sold 176 million units, it may be the best-selling game of all time. Tetris seems to be its closest rival, but this is not an exact comparison as many versions of Tetris exist with different visuals and features. If you analyze all purchases of Tetris – and delete the many free versions – it turns out that previous versions sold 70 million copies. This figure seems to contain partial sales of phones, because in 2010, EA announced that the mobile version had exceeded 100 million copies sold. The figure of 70 million was reported in 2009.
Around the same time, EA adopted a free game model for Tetris on smartphones. Instead of buying the game directly, you have to buy microtransactions that give you coins and the ability to remove commercials. Even if we combine the figure of 70 million with the figure of 100 million – even though there may be an overlap – Tetris sales are still lower than Minecraft sales.

Minecraft seems to be the best-selling game of all time if all these factors are taken into account. Although estimates suggest that Tetris has been downloaded more than 500 million times, its fragmentation between so many different spinoffs prevents any direct comparison between the two games. A better comparison would be between Grand Theft Auto V, which amounts to about 110 million units sold.
