The tiny British Mini Coopers have been around for decades (exactly six), but the first all-electric version was unveiled on Tuesday.

The world premiere in Rotterdam in the Netherlands showed the electrified Mini that looks like its non-electric predecessors, but with a modified radiator grille and no exhaust pipes – since there's no such thing 39 exhaust here with the zero emission vehicle. This mini is the whole battery and the electric motor.

The latest BMW Group car will be available next year and its production will start in November at the Mini Plant in Oxford, England. Pre-orders with a $ 500 deposit are open in the UK and reservations are available in Germany, France, the Netherlands, Sweden and Norway. Availability in the United States has not been announced yet. The car starts at about $ 35,000.

The Mini Cooper SE, as it is officially called, offers up to 165 km of battery life and can go from 0 to 100 km / h in 7.3 seconds. It's a tiny car with limited load capacity, but it's touted as an urban car with a "kart feel," said Bernd Koerber, Mini SVP, at the first event. The basic model Tesla Model 3 offers a range of about 220 km for a similar base price, but it's a complete sedan.

In countries where the Electric Mini will arrive for the first time, public charging networks are abundant. A study from the European Federation of Transport and the Environment last year revealed that each public load port has five electric vehicles spread throughout Europe, offering good load coverage. If an owner uses street parking away from a socket, the Mini battery will last longer, unlike most daily trips.

Here's a comparison with a 2017 Mini Cooper, showing that the design is very similar to recent models, despite the new electrification.

The 32.6 kWh battery is on the floor of the vehicle and the electric motor is lighter than its old combustion engine. With a quick charger, the car can be refilled in about 35 minutes.

The Mini Cooper Countryman was already electric in 2017 as a hybrid plug-in option. Already 40,000 orders for the Electric Mini had been placed before the first.

Mini is part of the BMW group that uses its electric BMW i3 since 2013. Its other vehicles switch to electricity. The company plans to have more than 500,000 electric vehicles on the roads by the end of the year. By 2023, BMW plans to have 25 power options, including at least half of all-electric options, such as the new Mini. Last week, BMW CEO Harald Krueger resigned.
