Ministry of Justice opens investigation into emissions certification

Ford says the Department of Justice has opened a criminal investigation into its US emissions certification process.

The automaker said in a regulatory filing that "the case is currently focused on issues relating to road load estimates, including analytical modeling and downhill tests".

Last September, a group of employees reported potential problems with a mathematical model used to calculate pollution and mileage, prompting Ford to use an outside company to conduct tests. And in February, Ford launched an investigation to determine whether it had overstated gasoline consumption and underestimated emissions from a wide range of vehicles.

Ford Motor Co. voluntarily disclosed the case to the Environmental Protection Agency and the California Air Resources Board in February. He also notified a number of other state and federal agencies.

Ford said Friday that it was cooperating fully with all government agencies.
