Minnesota 34, Purdue 31: Highway Flight

Despite a defense that fought mightily all night Jack plummer hit Payne Durham for his fourth touchdown pass of the night as Purdue claimed his first victory at TCF Bank Stadium 38-34 on the Golden Gophers of Minnesota. The 19-yard touchdown pass gave Purdue his first lead of the night as the Boilers overcame a pair of missed goals to claim the victory.

What, isn’t that what happened?

Oh I am sorry. I thought Durham doing what every receiver literally does on a pass was fine and not inexplicably offensive pass interference. Twice this evening Purdue had touchdowns taken off the board due to a ridiculously awful exam or call. On Monday morning, he will receive a letter from the conference offices saying “they apologize to Purdue for the refereeing errors made in Friday night’s game.”

It doesn’t matter.

It was an absolutely maddening game. Purdue left points on the field with JD Dellinger having a blocked kick (after Rondale Moore had a legitimate kick on a close tocuhdown) and missing a 33 yards. The defense didn’t play well at all until PJ Fleck gave them two saves. Before missing Dellinger’s fourth quarter (thanks to a giveaway from Fleck calling for a terrible play in the fourth and short), Jeff Brohm maligned by forgetting that he had a 240-pound backer against a defense against a bad run at 1st and 10th of Minnesota 21 with 6 Minutes remaining. I don’t know why now was not the time to make their throats run, but it made Miss Dellinger sting even more.

Even then, Purdue got the ball back and got the winning score, only for snatching it on a horrible call. I know you should never hand the game over to the officials and two field goal errors did, but when a call is SO blatant … how can you not be furious? And I didn’t even mention the Bell reception he snatched from the hands of a defender who was knocked down under the covert angle no one saw (luckily Milton Wright had a first try right after ).

All of this on a night where David Bell and Rondale Moore combined exactly what we wanted from them: 220 receiving yards and three total touchdowns.

Monday’s Big Ten apology absolutely means cock.
