Mira Furlan Dead: Babylon 5 and Lost actress died at 65

Mira Furlan, best known for her roles as Minbari Delenn ambassador on Babylon 5 and Danielle Rousseau on Lost, died at the age of 65.

Furlan died Wednesday of undisclosed causes. His death was confirmed the following evening on Twitter. Shortly after, Babylon 5 designer J. Michael Straczynski shared a touching tribute.

“It is a night of great sadness, because our friend and comrade had taken the road where we cannot reach her,” Straczynski wrote. “But as with everything, we’ll catch up with her in time, and I believe she will have many stories to tell us and many new roles to share with the universe.

The eulogy continues, reading in part: “Mira was a good and kind woman, an amazing and talented performer and a friend to all the cast and crew of Babylon 5, and we are all devastated by the news. The actors she’s been particularly close to since the show’s end will need room to deal with this moment, so be gentle if they don’t respond for a while. We have walked this route too many times and it only gets more difficult.

Originally from the former Yugoslavia, Furlan emigrated to the United States in 1991, just a year before landing his role as the star of Delenn on Babylon 5. But she was already an accomplished actress by then, having worked in theater, film and television in her home country. In 1985 she played Ankica Vidmar in the film When my father was away on business, which was nominated for the Oscar for best foreign language film.

Six years later Babylon 5, Furlan debuted as a scientist Danielle Rousseau on ABC’s Lost, and went on to appear in 20 episodes over six seasons. Additional TV credits included episodes of NCIS, Law & Order: Los Angeles and Just add some magic.

Furlan is survived by her husband, director Goran Gajić, and their son, Marko.

The five seasons of Babylon 5 travel to HBO Max on Tuesday, January 26.
