While he didn’t take advantage of the enduring cinematic power of the endless iterations of Michael Myers, Jason or Freddy to name just three horror icons, 1990s boogeyman Candyman did produce cult and sleeper status. that is unique to it. Now he’s got a new shot at cinematic death with what is essentially a reboot, the original title intact, rather than a remake of the 1992 original that starred Tony Todd in a memorable take on the creepy guy you don’t. Don’t want to repeat the name five times while standing in front of a mirror. This particular film on its own has attracted a few forgettable sequels, but now, thanks to some clever filmmakers who figured out what drove the idea forward, it’s back for a 30th anniversary update, or rather a rediscovery. .
In the 1992 version, Virginia Madsen played Helen Lyle, a researcher obsessed with the legend and myth of this creepy figure with a hook for a hand who haunted Chicago’s dilapidated public housing project, Cabrini Green. The film was ahead of its time in terms of using genre to evoke issues of systemic racism and social injustice. Years later movies like the Oscar winner Get out and We of Jordan Peele would be acclaimed for weaving serious trouble for black America into the annals of horror, so it’s no surprise after his banter in reporting The twilight zone that Peele’s name would appear here as a producer and co-writer with director Nia DaCosta, who did a very elegant job not only managing to bring this character and story to life for a new generation, but also in making some pertinent remarks how far away we do not have come in dealing with the racial division. Additionally, the brilliant use of the black shadow puppet, sneaking in and out of the film, powerfully tells the story of black oppression through the years as a counterpoint to the live action featured.
It is now 2019 and the focus is on a couple – Brianna Cartwright (Teyonah Parris), an artists’ agent, and her artist-partner Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul Mateen II) – living where Cabrini Green was, in a beautifully appointed apartment, as they weave their way into Chicago’s art world. However, Anthony stumbles upon the legend of Candyman and, like Helen Lyle before him, becomes more and more obsessed with all things Candyman, especially in his paintings, one of which, titled “Say My Name”, quickly becomes viral by connecting to a series of murders of mostly white young women. McCoy, satisfied with the attention after going through a downward spiral in his career, begins a new wave of intense artistic endeavors that become darker and more menacing, with strange things also happening to his body after a visit to what remained from the original Cabrini Green. Yeah guys, he’s starting to take on some kind of a mirror image of this dreaded killer, but is it real or just psychological? An encounter with Burke (Colman Domingo), who as a child claims to have had an altercation with the eponymous bogeyman and has been assigned since, works as a device to fill in the details of the story he becomes entangled with.
Mateen proves he has a natural on-screen presence here and serves the reboot well, just like Parris. Also notable in the cast are Nathan Stewart Jarrett as Brianna’s brother; Rebecca Spence as an arrogant art critic who suddenly (and cynically) takes an interest in Anthony’s work once it has gained the attention of the press; and Vanessa Williams and Todd himself, both refugees from the 1992 film, making brief but impressive impressions here too.
Win Rosenfeld and Ian Cooper join Peele as producers. Universal, which releases it on Friday, MGM and Bron are key production entities – with their opening logos coming soon. reverse, this fellow signals with a wink that we are ready for a very intelligent ride.
