LONDON (AP) – A medieval chess piece bought at a price of £ 5 ($ 7.50) by an antiquarian in Scotland in 1964 proved to be one of the famous medieval Lewis Chessmen and is expected to yield more than 600,000 £ ($ 670,000) on sale by Sotheby's.
The Lewis Chessmen were discovered in 1831 in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. Considered as one of the finest medieval chess pieces, most of them are on display at the British Museum in London and the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh.
Some 93 pieces were found at the time, with five pieces missing. The coin to be auctioned on July 2nd is the first piece to be found.
Sotheby's Alexander Kader said Monday that the discovery was "one of the most exciting and personal re-discoveries of my career."
