The Armed Forces’ Third Quarter of the Bowl between No.24 Tulsa and the State of Mississippi featured one of the strangest dishes you’ll ever see.
Mississippi State maintained a 21-13 lead but returned to Tulsa with less than a minute to go in the third. This was when the generally reliable Tucker Day crashed into a crash.
Day, who averaged 45 yards per punt during the regular season, kind of threw the ball with his cleat. He started a low liner that went straight to Tulsa’s Trevor Reh, who was standing just a yard past the line of scrimmage.
Reh, surprised to see the ball heading towards him, somehow managed to catch up with the punt before being quickly attacked by one of Mississippi State’s blockers.
It was on the books as a zero yard punt with a zero yard return. You don’t see this every day.
The blunder gave the ball to Tulsa on the MSU’s 32-yard line. Nine games later, the Golden Hurricane scored to reduce the score to 21-19. It was as close as Tulsa could be, however.
The team’s two-point conversion attempt failed. This game proved to be significant as the State of Mississippi won 28-26. Key play in MSU’s victory was a six-90-yard pick by rookie Emmanuel Forbes as it looked like Tulsa would take their first lead of the game late in the third quarter. That defensive score increased MSU’s lead from 14-13 to 21-13.
Another interception thrown by Zach Smith near the goal line at the end of the fourth took another golden opportunity for Tulsa. Smith would throw a touchdown pass with 1:23 left, but the ensuing in-play kick attempt was picked up by the Bulldogs.
All in all, it was a tough way for Tulsa to end what was a great season.
The Golden Hurricane, who played Thursday’s game without National Defensive Player of the Year Zaven Collins, lost their first game to Oklahoma State before going undefeated in conference during the regular season. Tulsa then fell to Cincinnati undefeated on a last second basket in the AAC title game. With the loss of the bowl, Tulsa ends his season with a 6-3 record.
Mississippi State, in his first season under Mike Leach, finished 4-7.
