Republican Senate Leader Mitch McConnell on Saturday denounced what he called a “radical temper tantrum” after his Kentucky home was vandalized with messages protesting his refusal to increase aid payments of Covid from $ 600 to $ 2,000.
The attack followed a similar attack on the home of Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the Democratic House, in San Francisco.
Democrats under Pelosi backed the move to increase payments, but McConnell blocked it, despite its origin in a request from Donald Trump.
According to local media reports, on Saturday morning, the majority leader’s home in Louisville was spray painted with slogans such as “Weres [sic] my money? ”and“ Mitch kills the poor ”.
Police reported minor damage. It was not immediately clear whether McConnell and his wife, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, were home at the time.
In California, Pelosi’s house was adorned with a pig’s head, red paint, and messages including “cancel the rent” and “We want it all.”
In a statement on Saturday, McConnell said: “I’ve spent my career fighting for the First Amendment [which protects free speech] and advocate for peaceful protests. I appreciate every Kentuckian who has embarked on the democratic process, whether he agrees with me or not.
“This is different. Vandalism and the politics of fear have no place in our society. My wife and I have never been intimidated by this toxic playbook. We just hope our neighbors in Louisville won’t be. not too bothered by this radical temper tantrum.
The State Republican Party has called on Democrats to speak out against the vandalism. In a tweet, Democratic Governor Andy Beshear called the vandalism “unacceptable”.
“While the First Amendment protects our freedom of speech,” he wrote, “Vandalism is wrong and never acceptable for any reason.”
Protesters both against McConnell and for Trump in his attempts to hold onto power – which McConnell opposed – gathered outside the home of the majority leader.
“We all know Trump supporters and what everyone wants to call Black Lives Matter have their differences,” one protester said. in images posted on social networks.
“But collectively we’re here because Mitch is a slut and he owes the American people money … we’re here together to protest because the government, the system, has ripped us all off in different ways.”
