Mitchell Trubisky returns as Bears starting QB vs Packers

Mitchell Trubisky is back.

Chicago Bears coach Matt Nagy announced Friday that Trubisky will start against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.

“We are delighted that Mitch is ready and that this is an opportunity for him,” Nagy said. “… He’s extremely prepared.”

The head coach did not assure Trubisky would keep the starting position behind Week 12.

The Bears have classified Nick Foles as doubtful to play Sunday night due to a hip injury. Foles was ousted from the team’s Week 10 pre-bye loss after a hard landing. Despite the week off, the injury portended the veteran quarterback sitting at least a week.

Trubisky was benched in the second half of the Bears’ return win in Atlanta after a shaky start that included opening the third quarter with a brutal interception when the QB misinterpreted the defense. Although Trubisky helped the Bears off to a 2-0 start to the season, Nagy joined veteran Foles at real first chance.

“I have no doubts about what we did in any way,” Nagy said on Friday of the September shift change.

Trubisky played a snap in week 8, taking a run from QB and injured his shoulder on the play. He was inactive the last two games due to the injury.

With Foles’ inconsistent play as the Bears fell to 5-5 with four straight losses, the tides turned to the Bears giving Trubisky one more shot to get his job back. The fourth-year quarterback was brutally inconsistent and missed too many shots. His running ability, however, could give Nagy’s offense a much needed boost.

The bear offense has been bad no matter who is under center. Chicago ranks last in the NFL in rushing, last in conversion percentage in third out, 31st in total yards and 31st in scoring.

Chicago is one game away from last place for the Wild Card in the NFC before Sunday’s game with division rival Green Bay. Of the Bears’ last six games, only two are against teams with more than four wins – the Packers twice. Nagy’s side have an outside chance to steal a playoff berth if they can improve QB play down the stretch.

Without a contract for next season, Trubisky will have another chance to prove he can be a starting quarterback. If he doesn’t improve on his tough start to open the season, it will be another round of quarterback roulette in Chicago.
