The first 78 draft MLB choices from 2019 were made. The MLB began its amateur draft of 40 rounds with the first round, the first extra round, the competitive round A, the second round, the competitive round B and the second round of extra Monday night at a live show on the MLB network. Here is our selective analysis of the first round.
Of course, there are two days left and more than 1,100 other choices to come. The project continues with rounds 3-10 on Tuesday and ends with rounds 11 to 40 on Wednesday. While the first series attract the most attention and that is understandable, the last series are those where the organizational depth is built. Success in the final rounds often separates the contenders from the contenders.
The repechage to continue on Tuesday, here is an overview of the best players still on the board. I think it's important to separate the best players available into two categories, so we'll do exactly that. Let's go.
High school players with signature problems
Every year, many high school players are paid. They have strong academic commitments and set exorbitant bonus requirements. Sometimes they get paid – the Pirates gave Josh Bell what was then considered a monster bonus ($ 5 million) to pass on to the university in 2011 – but usually they do not, and they go to school.
At this point, one of two things to come with the players in this section. Either they will not be recruited (or will be very late) and will finish school, or they will be immediately rescued on Tuesday after negotiating an agreement overnight. It's technically against the rules! But it happens all the time. Teams will work to obtain a number so that they can plan accordingly. Here are high-school students always on the table.
RHP Matthew Allan, Seminole HS (Florida): Allan was the best high school pitcher in the draft class. It has everything the teams need from a throwing perspective, including power (fastball, curved ball, change of direction), good control and size (6 feet 3 inches and 210 pounds). Allan is hired in Florida and would have set a price of $ 4 million. Of the players in this section, I think it's the most remarkable, but it's still likely that he finds himself on campus at this point.
Barco LHP Hunter, The Bolles School (Florida): Barco, the best lefty high schooler in a class lacking power, shows three above average shots and good speed. Its location for the lower arm (think Madison Bumgarner) sometimes creates command problems, although experience can help solve this problem. Barco is engaged in Florida, an excellent player development program, and if he finds himself in school, he could be among the top 10 picks in three years.
3B Tyler Callihan, Providence School, Florida: In the days leading up to the repechage, Callihan had a lot of buzz in the first round. He's a good clean hitter from the left side and an excellent sneaky athlete considering his size (5-foot-11 and 210 lbs). Callihan is an older high school student (19 years old on June 22nd) and the record of older high school seniors in professional ballooning is not good. They tend to slip the day of the project and that is exactly what is happening with Callihan. It's a commitment from South Carolina.
OF Maurice Hampton, Memphis University School, Tennessee: Hampton and Kyler Murray have something in common: they were both Americans in football and baseball. As you can imagine, Hampton is an excellent athlete with exceptional tools, but he is brutal on a baseball field. He struggled to compete with the best competitions in the demonstration events. Hampton is attached to LSU, where he plays baseball and football. A tweet deleted since Monday night said he planned to go to school.
RHP Jack Leiter, Delbarton HS (New Jersey): Jack is the son of the great longtime player Al Leiter and he plays as the son of a former MLB star. It is exceptionally advanced for a high school student with a deep arsenal, excellent command and a very good pitching skills. Leiter knows how to prepare the batters and exploit the weaknesses. His fastball is a bit short at this time (90-92 mph), but after three years at Vanderbilt, he could become the number one candidate. Leiter would only be willing to sign with the Yankees or Mets and it would take a lot of money. At this point, he is almost certain that he is going to school.
1B / LHP Spencer Jones, The Costa Canyon HS (California): A broken elbow put Jones on the shelf all spring and took him out of the first round. He is a legitimate two-way candidate as a first-baseman who strikes hard with athleticism to play in the outside field and a bitter left-hander with a very good curve. Jones is gigantic (6 feet 7 inches and 205 pounds) and has a good positive side on both sides of the ball. The teams did not see him this spring because of his injury, which makes him likely to end in Vanderbilt. It's a pity. Jones is a fascinating prospect.
Other best players available
High school students with signature issues will dominate the list of "best available players" that you will see on Tuesday and Wednesday. The next 10 players are the best players available who are supposed to sign.
RHP Osmond Bryce, Jenks HS (Oklahoma): Bryce is a legitimate two-way prospect as a short-handed and right-handed pitcher. The consensus is that he has a better long-term future on the mound, where he has low-temperature gas and a promising slider. He is an excellent athlete with a powerful bat and strong defensive chops. Bryce is engaged in the state of Oklahoma and would play both ways for the Cowboys. That said, it is generally considered signable.
LHP Matt Cronin, Arkansas: With a 90's heater and a hammerhead, Cronin should be among the first to be hired in 2019 to reach the big leagues. He is a career lifter with high turnover rates, choppy delivery and bulldog mentality. An analyst-savvy club should take Cronin early on Tuesday and immediately prepare him for his league debut early next year.
Ethan Hearn, Christian Mobile HS (Alabama): Hearn is quite easily the best high school catcher in the 2019 project class. He has the power and a very good arm, but his reception needs to be improved, as is his approach to the plate. Hearn is committed to the Mississippi State, but wrestlers are still more skilled than the ranking of surveillance publications suggests. Some club officials must choose Hearn early Tuesday and respect the asking price, whatever.
SS Will Holland, Auburn. An outstanding performance with wooden sticks in the prestigious Cape Cod League last summer put Holland on the map. This is a type of powerful tools, and its unrefined defense tools are at immediate halt. Athletics and power potential are enticing. Holland, however, will need help to refine its momentum and become more consistent on the ground.
RHP Jack Kochanowicz, Harrison HS (Pennsylvania): Kochanowicz is long and lean (6 feet 6 inches and 210 pounds) and quite unrefined, which is not surprising for a child in cold weather. However, he is already sitting in the mid-90s and his curved ball is characterized by the high rotation speed that teams love. Kochanowicz is engaged in Virginia and has the tools to rank among the Top 15 over the next three years. He is expected to go on Tuesday to take the money instead.
3B Drew Mendoza, State of Florida: A left-winger with huge power and a little swing-and-miss in his game, Mendoza has a risky offensive profile and not enough defensive value to compensate. Regardless of the team chosen on Tuesday, she will bet on the ability of her player development team to help Mendoza make more regular contact and / or improve his defense on third base.
C Kyle McCann, Georgia Tech: I was expecting McCann to leave the table on Monday, as teams are still aggressively searching for sensors. Quality sensors are hard to find and teams print on the day of the repechage. McCann has a lot of power on the left, and whatever team is waiting for him, hopes he'll improve his defense after getting stuck in Joey Bart's backup, the choice number 2 in 2018, as a young freshman.
RHP Ryan Pepiot, Indiana: Pepiot is the epitome of the prospect of launching the college for the second day. It's been three years now that he's working as a starter with good, if not fanciful, and he has an offside in his changing trend. Pepiot throws the ball from a slot under his arm, which causes control and squad problems. Nevertheless, guys like this one tend to be successful in professional ball games and offer great value to the league, even if it is only a medium relief.
LHP Erik Miller, Stanford: Miller had a buzz at the last minute in the first round. However, he remains on the board and is the best pitcher available in a project that was lightweight at first. Miller is huge (6 feet 5 inches and 240 pounds) with a fast mid-90s ball and a slider and a change of direction that both look like equal shots on his best days. The control and delivery problems are holding him back. Expect Miller to be among the first players selected on Tuesday.
LHP Graeme Stinson, Duke: A hamstring injury sabotaged Stinson's stock this spring. His belongings and control were saved as a result of the injury, knocking him down. When she's right, the massive Southpaw (6-foot-5, 260-lb) operates with a fast ball from the mid-90s and one of the best sliders in the draft class. Stinson may not be a long-term relief, but the raw tools allow it to be a very good tool.
