MLB 2019 Project: The Tigers choose 3B Nick Quintana with the overall choice # 47

The Detroit Tigers selected Arizona's third baseman, Nick Quintana, with choice number 47 in the MLB draft. Quintana, 21, was their second and final pick on the first day of the MLB draft in 2019.

Quintana's business card is above average gross power. He hit 34 homers in three seasons with the Wildcats and added 17 doubles each year. He beat .346 / .469 / .630 with 14 home runs in his junior season, propelling himself into draft boards as spring progressed. The Scouts were a bit worried about his high exit rate – they hovered around 20%, a bit high for an advanced college bat – but he raised his walking rate to an impressive 17% this year.

There are also questions about Quintana's ability to hit with a wooden bat. He beat a poor .230 / .312 / .423 in two seasons in the Cape Cod League, with an impressive 38% shoot-off in 69 games. However, he added 11 circuits in that period, so there was some power to speak of. He also experienced some growth during his second summer in Cape Town, improving his SPO by more than 100 points while improving his exit and walking rates.

Quintana had previously been selected by the Boston Red Sox in 2016, while he was a talented hopeful in stopping short coming out of Nevada High School. Since then he has gone on to third base after being strengthened in college, where his fast hands and athleticism should help him become a strong defender. He is a runner below average, but MLB Pipeline ranks him as a potential defender with an above-average arm.

Quintana is a little less ranked than 47th on most draft boards. MLB Pipeline ranks 77th and Baseball America ranks 81st. However, FanGraphs was higher than most other players, ranking it 43rd in the standings before the project. Regardless of the position of the repechage, the Tigers hope to mitigate Quintana's swing errors and tap into his raw power, which will give them a solid producer at the next level.
