The Atlanta Braves acquired veteran wide receiver Stephen Vogt from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for first baseman hope Mason Berne. The brave announced the agreement Saturday morning.

Vogt, 36, hit .212 / .307 / .386 (88 OPS +) with five homers in 52 games. For his career, the double All-Star has an OPS + of 98 over games of nine major league seasons. Vogt owes the balance of a salary of $ 3.5 million for 2021 and is eligible for free agency at the end of the season.

With the Braves, Vogt’s left-handed bat pairs well with Kevan Smith behind the plate. Vogt can also play at first base and has seen some left field time at times in recent seasons. Atlanta needs help at the receiver level due to the torn thumb ligament suffered by Travis d’Arnaud and hamstring strain suffered by Alex Jackson. In addition, William Contreras was recently demoted to the rank of triple A due to his ineffectiveness in the plate.

The Braves recently added outfielder Joc Pederson to the squad in a trade with the Cubs, signaling general manager Alex Anthopoulos will be active until the July 30 deadline. The Braves enter Saturday’s roster with a losing record of 44-46 and third in the NL East. However, they are only four games behind the Mets, who won first place. Despite the loss of Ronald Acuña Jr., who recently suffered a season-ending knee injury, the Braves are behaving like contenders.

On the D-Backs’ side, Bern, 33rd round in 2018, beat .231 / .315 / .344 in parts of two minor league seasons. He’s already 25 and hasn’t played over the rookie ball.
