MLB announces new minor teams and leagues

League names have changed, as have many affiliates, but minor league baseball is still reaching hundreds of communities across North America in 2021.

Major League Baseball announced a new plan for affiliate baseball on Friday, with 120 Minor League clubs officially agreeing to join the new Professional Development League (PDL). Below is a full list of Major League teams and their new affiliates, one for each full season ball level, as well as a complex league team (Gulf Coast and Arizona).

In total, the Integrated Player Development System now includes 179 teams in 17 leagues in 43 states and four provinces. Including the AZL and GCL, there are 209 teams in 19 leagues in 44 states and four provinces. This includes the 150 teams of the PDL and AZL / GCL as well as the four partner leagues: the American Association, the Atlantic League, the Frontier League and the Pioneer League.

“We are delighted to unveil this new model, which not only provides a pipeline to Majors, but continues the minor league tradition of entertaining millions of families in hundreds of communities,” said baseball commissioner Robert D. Manfred Jr. .. “In modernizing our minor league system, we have prioritized the qualities that make minor leagues an integral part of our game while strengthening the way we develop professional athletes on and off the field. We look forward to demonstrating the best of our game in local communities, supporting all those working hard to grow the sport, and sharing unparalleled technology and resources with Minor League teams and players.

One of the key points of this realignment is the relocation of Triple-A affiliates closer to their Major League clubs. These affiliates, on average, will be over 200 miles closer to their parent clubs, giving area fans more access to watching their MLB team’s prospects move up the organizational ladder.

A new set of standards will be instituted across PDL and affiliates at the Triple-A, Double-A, High-A and Low-A levels. It starts with a salary increase for players at all four levels, ranging from 38% to 72% for the 2021 season. The facilities and working conditions of players will also be improved and modernized to meet the needs of professional athletes and staff. . There will also be less travel in season for players and coaches.
