Milwaukee Brewers reliever Devin Williams was named the 2020 National League Rookie of the Year on Monday night. He beat Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm and Padres infielder Jake Cronenworth for the prize. Williams received 14 of 30 first-place votes, including nine at Bohm, six at Cronenworth and one at Dodgers pitcher Tony Gonsolin.

Williams, 26, made his MLB debut in August 2019 and was on the Milwaukee Big League roster all of the 2020 season. He gave up only one earned run (0.33 ERA) and eight hits (0.63 WHIP) in 27 innings this season while knocking out 53 batters. This equates to 1.2 WAR in just 27 rounds. He joins Ryan Braun (2007) and Pat Listach (1992) as the only brewers to be named Rookie of the Year.

For much of the season, Cronenworth, 26, has been the favorite for Rookie of the Year. But he struggled late and finished with an excellent .285 / .354 / .477 hitting line and 15 doubles in 54 games. Bohm, 24, made his debut on August 13 and made a big impact in 44 games, reaching 0.338 / 0.400 / 0.481 with four homers and 23 RBIs.

In the American League, Mariners batsman Kyle Lewis unanimously won Rookie of the Year honors.

As a reminder, voting for all major awards takes place after the regular season and before the playoffs. These are just regular season awards.

The Rookie of the Year Awards were the first of MLB’s major awards to be presented this week. Follow all the award finalists and the schedule here.
