With batters beating to reach the barricades to an all-time high in 2019, Major League Baseball set a new one-season attack record for the 12th consecutive season on Tuesday night.
Tampa Bay Rays 'Willy Adames's short stoppage in the fifth round of New York Yankees' Stephen Tarpley marked the 41.208th outing early in the season, exceeding the 2018 mark.
Before the record began in 2008, the mark was 32,404 in 2001. A total of 29,937 batting strikes took place in 1996, before reaching the 30,000 mark for the first time the following year.
Tuesday's record came less than two weeks after MLB broke the record of a home-run season. On Tuesday, there were 6,550 home runs this season, shattering the 6,105 mark in 2017.
Although the 2019 season was defined by the long ball, withdrawals on catches were almost as important.
At the start of the day, there were 151 players with at least 100 strikeouts this season. The all time record for a single season is 153 players, a mark set in 2018. Three players entered Tuesday with 99 strikeouts (Max Kepler, Kevin Kiermaier and Adam Jones).
The 2019 season saw 22 launchers reach the plateau of 200 points, the most in the modern era (since 1900). Sonny Gray of the Cincinnati Reds, Eduardo Rodriguez of the Boston Red Sox and Madison Bumgarner of the San Francisco Giants broke the 200-point mark in their debut on Tuesday night.
