MLB commentator Jim Kaat apologizes for ‘compliments’ on Yoán Moncada referring to slavery during broadcast

An MLB broadcaster apologized Friday night for referring to slavery in an attempt to compliment a Chicago White Sox player. When Yoán Moncada stepped in, Jim Kaat’s co-announcer recalled that the first time he saw Moncada play, he asked the Baltimore Orioles, “Can we have one?” Kaat quickly replied, “Get a 40 acre field full of them.” He apologized in the fifth inning of the game: “When Yoan Moncada was at home plate trying to compliment the great player, I used the wrong choice of words which resulted in a callous and hurtful remark. And I’m sorry.”
