MLB Free Agency: Kevin Gausman Accepts Giants Qualifying Offer; George Springer, JT Realmuto dismisses

As expected, wide receiver JT Realmuto and outfielder George Springer rejected the $ 18.9 million qualifying offer ahead of Wednesday’s 5 p.m. ET deadline. MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand Reports. The duo will now be attached to the compensation of the draft as a free agent. Giants right-hander Kevin Gausman, meanwhile, has accepted the qualifying offer and will return to the squad, reports Jeff Passan of ESPN.

Six free agents received the qualifying offer this offseason. Here are their decisions:

Bauer, LeMahieu, Realmuto and Springer were all expected to reject the qualifying offer. They’re in line for much bigger paydays and multi-year contracts this offseason. Gausman and Stroman were more on the fence, however, and both pitchers ultimately accepted the $ 18.9 million qualifying offer rather than testing the open market.

Gausman, 29, threw a 3.62 ERA with 79 strikeouts in 59 2/3 innings with San Francisco in 2020. The Giants tweaked his field selection slightly (he threw more splitters, in particular) and the result was a better 11.9 K / 9. Gausman and Giants would discuss a multi-year contract but apparently could not agree until the qualifying offer deadline.

Our RJ Anderson ranked Springer, Realmuto, Bauer and LeMahieu among the top four free agents in the market this offseason in that order. If these players sign with a new team, their old team will now be entitled to draft compensation. Here are the pay conditions if one of these players signs with a new team:

  • Astros: Pick after the fourth round for Springer.
  • Phillies: Choose after competitive balance round B for Realmuto.
  • The Reds: Choose after the first round if Bauer’s contract is $ 50 million or more, otherwise a choice after competitive balance round B.
  • Yankees: Pick after the fourth round for LeMahieu.

Compensation for draft picks is tied to the team’s luxury tax status and player contract, resulting in different picks for different players. Teams that sign a qualified free agent will forfeit a draft pick (or draft picks and international bonus money, in some cases) after the first round.

To be clear, players who reject the qualifying offer can still return to their old team. The Phillies are expected to go to great lengths to retain Realmuto and there would be mutual interest in a meeting between the Yankees and LeMahieu. The qualifying offer simply gives the team the right to draft compensation if both parties fail to reach a deal.

With the deadline for qualifying offers in the rearview mirror, the next notable selection deadline on the offseason schedule is November 20. Many top prospects will be added to the 40 players that day. In addition, there will be several small trades and the teams will put their list in order.
